Everything Must Be Sold

In a world that's full of struggle and strife,
I went searching for the meaning of life.
A thousand signs pointed out the way,
And each one led me more astray.

In the shadows of a rundown store,
I found what I was looking for.
An old man who was wise but weak,
Shook his head and began to speak.

“See the sign that's in every store,
Everything must be sold!
To the Saudi prince and the man next door
Just more, and more, and more, and more.

“The wheels that make this world go round,
Everything must be sold.
The dollar, euro, yen, and pound,
Everything must be sold.

“Whiskey, watches, wool, and war,
Everything must be sold.
At every corner another store,
Everything must be sold.

“Mountains, water, air, and sea,
Everything must be sold.
Big profits selling what was free,
Everything must be sold.

“Adoring fans surround the stage,
Everything must be sold.
The latest idol of this age,
Everything must be sold.

“They can hardly wait until you go,
Everything must be sold.
And now I'm obsolete and old,
Everything must be sold.

“And sadly, love's a fairytale,
Everything must be sold.
When even people go on sale,
Everything must be sold.

“The TV preacher on a roll,
Even Jesus must be sold.
He'll gain the world and lose his soul,
Everything must be sold."
